Interracial-Dating-for-Millennials_-Here-is-What-You-Need-to-Know

In the United States, there has been a significant increase in interracial relationships in recent years. In 2015, 17% of all marriages were interracial relationships, which is a huge increase from 1967 when only 3% of all marriages were interracial.

With this increase in interracial relationships comes an increase in the need for advice on how to navigate these types of relationships, improve partner connections, and build a long-lasting and loving companionship.

So today we’re going to talk about some tips and advice for those of you who are entering into an interracial relationship or looking to improve one. Let’s take a look!

Interracial Dating for Millennials

The reality is that millennials are among the most open-minded, accepting, diverse, and progressive generations. Millennials are the ones that demand equality and are far more tolerant of others, regardless of gender, race, or partner.

With that in mind, when it comes to dating, no matter who you date, there are still a few things you should keep in mind. Building a relationship with anyone requires commencement, communication, love, and much more.

Here are a few tips and pieces of advice for interracial dating for millennials

1. Don’t Let Other People’s Opinions Bother You

There will always be people who will have something negative to say about your relationship. Whether it’s family members, friends, or even strangers, there will always be someone who doesn’t approve of your relationship. It’s important not to let these people get to you and to remember that you are in the relationship, not them.

This one may have seemed obvious or cliché, but it’s important, especially when in an interracial relationship. Although there are many people who are accepting, there are still many people that will judge. The best thing is to rise above it and not let it affect who you are and how you feel.

2. Be Prepared to Deal with Cultural Differences

Cultural differences can be a blessing in a relationship. However, it can also be a bit surprising if you’re not too familiar with that culture. With over 3,800 distinct cultures in our world, it is most likely that you don’t know everything about each one. Nobody expects you to… however, it’s important to be prepared for cultural differences when entering into a relationship.

Culture is beautiful and there are so many of them, but they are all so very different. So it’s good to just be prepared for those differences.

They can bring you closer together or drive you apart. It’s important to be prepared for both the good and the bad when it comes to cultural differences and to be willing to work through them together as a couple.

3. Keep an Open Mind

As we already mentioned at the beginning of this article, millennials are more open-minded, this is especially true when talking about dating and relationships. However, that does not mean that there won’t be bumps in the road.

Be prepared for unforeseen challenges and remember to approach them with an open mind and a willingness to compromise. After all, relationships are all about to give and taking.

4. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate!

This one is important in any relationship but especially in an interracial relationship. Because of cultural differences, there will be things that you and your partner don’t see eye to eye on. And that’s okay! What’s not okay is not communicating about it.

It’s important to be able to talk to each other about difficult topics and to be able to have 101% honest conversations. This communication will help you understand each other better and build a stronger foundation for your relationship.

If something is bothering you or if you feel like your partner is not being respectful of your culture, be sure to communicate this with them. A good relationship is built on a foundation of mutual respect.

Regardless of race, age, ethnicity, culture, or anything else, communication is the key to every relationship.

5. Seek Out Supportive Friends & Family Members

Your friends and family members are a great resource for support, advice, and love. When entering into an interracial relationship, it’s important to seek out friends and family members who are supportive and accepting. These people will be a great sounding board for you as you navigate your relationship.

If you don’t have many (or any) supportive people in your life, there are plenty of online communities that can offer support and advice. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help when you need it.

Interracial dating can be a beautiful thing. It allows you to learn about other cultures, expand your worldview, and build relationships with people from all walks of life. However, it’s important to keep in mind that interracial relationships come with their own set of challenges.

6. Do Some Research

It is a good idea to do some of your own research and learn about the different cultures and customs that come with dating someone of another race. Not only will this help you avoid any awkward or potentially offensive situations, but it will also give you a greater appreciation for your partner’s culture.

You don’t need to become an expert on every culture, but a little bit of knowledge can go a long way. If you show your partner that you spent the time to learn on your own more about who they are, history, and culture, it can mean a lot to them!

This shows that you want to make things work, you love who they are and where they come from.

7. Intimacy with Your Partner

Cultural differences can often lead to misunderstandings in the bedroom. This is why it’s important to communicate with your partner about what you like, don’t like, and expect from intimacy.

Be patient with each other as you navigate these new waters and be willing to experiment a little bit! You may be surprised at how much fun you have trying new things together. Intimacy is an important part of any relationship, so make sure that you and your partner are on the same page when it comes to physical affection.

This is something that can affect any relationship but it’s important to not let it, as intimacy between you and your partner is a key part of building a lasting relationship.

Tips for Improving Intimacy

  • Communicate what you do and don’t like in bed
  • Have a safe word established ahead of time
  • Change things up and try new things

Lastly, it’s also important to ensure that you check your health on a regular basis. As of 2022, the average millennial is between the age of 26 and 41. This is the age group that should be getting things such as their health labs checked on a regular basis.

Testosterone levels can start to drop between the ages of 30 and 40, with a steep drop around the age of 50. By getting health labs though, you can easily check your testosterone levels as well as other health levels. Which are vital to having intimacy with your partner.

Millennials’ Advice for Interracial Dating

Dating someone of another race can be a rewarding experience, but it is important to go into it with your eyes wide open. Be sure to do your research, communicate openly with your partner, and approach everything with an open mind.

Lastly, always continue to work on intimacy between you and your partner and ensure that you’re health is in check!

If you can do all of these things, then you’re well on your way to a successful interracial relationship!
